Our two day Beginners’ cookery course is aimed at those with little or no cooking experience, who want to learn the basic skills that will help them to start cooking with confidence and enjoyment. 

This course is aimed at:

  • Adults with little experience or low in confidence in the kitchen 
  • Anyone who is looking to learn a new valuable life skill
  • Gap year students or those off to university 
  • This would be a good course to do before our 2 Day Essential course if you have no or little knowledge of cooking. 

Outline of the day

Each day we will start off with a chat or a brief demonstration about the days skills and then we will cook towards a two course lunch and dishes that can be enjoyed at home with friends and family.

  • How to organise yourself in the kitchen
  • How to read a recipe
  • Measurements
  • Essential knife skills – how to sharpen a knife
  • Eggs – how to cook!
  • Floured thickened sauces
  • Sauces – quick Mediterranean sauces
  • How to prepare and cook meat
  • Soups
  • Rice and pasta cooking
  • Beginners’ fish skills
  • Fruit and vegetable preparation
  • Beginners’ baking skills 

Here are some typical recipes that you will cover on the course (subject to seasons and availability):


  • Minestrone with homemade pesto
  • Eggs – scrambled, omelettes, poached
  • Cheese sauce – macaroni cheese
  • Ragu sauce
  • Salmon en papilotte (salmon cooked in a parcel!)
  • Useful and adaptable tomato sauce

Our longer cookery courses are a great way to learn new skills and flavour ideas in a fun and relaxed atmosphere at our Perthshire cookery school. They are suitable for all levels, from the complete beginner, to someone who is looking to broaden their culinary repertoire. They have been carefully designed to help you develop all the skills and confidence required to become a competent cook, capable of dealing with all culinary situations, and of course, producing delicious food.

Here is what to expect on our longer courses:

  • Small and informal classes. 6 students maximum
  • Course starts at 10am and ends around 4pm
  • Mixture of demonstrations & practical sessions; we believe that you can’t really get to grips with something unless you get your hands dirty!
  • All ingredients are weighed out for you in advance, giving you more time to spend on cooking
  • Recipes Folders provided
  • Aprons and all equipment provided

You just need to bring yourself and a good appetite!

After the initial booking we will contact you to confirm the booking and then be back in contact in good time before the course starts to confirm all the arrangements.

Booking Procedure

What to expect when you book a place on a course at Let’s Cook Scotland.

Book your place online or over the phone.

A booking email will follow to confirm your booking (NB even it is for two or more places it will still just say thank you for your booking.) If you don’t receive an email thanking you for your booking you have not got a place on the course. The email is immediate if booking online and if done by phone, it will come through once we have manually booked you on to the course.

Please check your spam folder if nothing comes into your in box.

We will then keep in contact by email or by phone if you have asked us to.

An automated reminder will drop into your in box ten days before the course. This is followed up by a more personal email from us with any particular instructions/directions for the course.

If you do not receive any emails from us please contact us ASAP, as you may not be booked on to the course.
